The Bukowski Archive
Year Completed
BArch Year 3
Location
Newark, UK
Project type
Civic Building
The Bukowski Archive stores all of Charles Bukowski’s poetry and works and houses a poet’s retreat. With writing areas, a lecture theatre, an archive, and reading rooms, the poets can be inspired by others and by Bukowski, while also providing a space for them to create their own works.
Located in Newark on the Lock Keeper’s Cottage site, this project creates an intimate atmosphere with views across into the neighbouring park.
The site’s private nature made it the perfect home for the archive, given the personal act of writing. Views of the park and the surrounding city allow the writers to observe the world around them and reflect that in their own work. Inspired by the unfiltered words of Bukowski, the project explores how this can be reflected in architecture to allow the visitors to be honest in their own creative expression.
